Assassin’s Creed codename RED, the next flagship in the Mirage series, is set in feudal Japan. A setting that fans and observers of the Assassin’s Creed series have long wanted.

And Ubisoft will supposedly leave nothing to chance. That means the current Axios newsletter by Stephen Totilo. Prominent Western games based on East Asian culture have often faced accusations of “cultural tourism” in recent years, Totilo told the newsletter.

Ubisoft doesn’t want to take that chance. Assassin’s Creed, codenamed RED, works with both its own Japanese studio and (external) advisors “in the interest of cultural authenticity and sensitivity,” Axios sources said.

Assassin’s Creed games are often made in multiple Ubisoft studios. All that is known so far about Assassin’s Creed codename RED is that it is being developed at the Ubisoft studio in Québec under the direction of Jonathan Dumont.

Assassin’s Creed has often been praised for its diversity in recent years, but these achievements have come with a price tag, Axios continues. Achieving diversity in video games was not easy – proponents also met resistance.
